I was visiting a friend recently. As I sat there eating amazing homemade treats, I kept noticing lovely things in the room.
And there I was, complimenting item after item - her soft, cozy blanket, a funky colored cupboard, a charming necklace, one of the treats, the picture on the wall, her handwriting, another of the treats, her style, another blanket, yet another of the treats and even her hobbies.
After an hour or two of this, my other friend turns to me, looks me straight in the eyes and says: You really need to get out more often!
And oh, is she right!
(Even though I will maintain that I will be head over heels in love with my friends style no matter how much I get out!)
But the rest of this post will prove to us all, once and for all, the desperate need for me to get out of the house more often.
Because I am going to talk to you about my newest fascination, my slight obsession and what I spend half of my free time thinking about (I spend the other half napping, just in case you were wondering).
It's my garden!
Yes, I live in an apartment but I am not going to let such a minor detail stop me.
Behold, a part of my garden.
Backrow from left: Rosemary, cilantro, and mint
Frontrow: All lovely, lovely tomatoes.
There are little flowers on one of them. The start of real tomatoes. I am so excited.
Apparently you have to shake the plant at least once a day when the flowers come, at least when you grow it indoors. And how do I know this? Well, I googled it. And I ended up reading 5 different articles about tomato plants.
I kinda like the idea of shaking the plants ... shake, shake, shake, shake, shake it some more ... You can't tell, but I was actually singing as I was typing that. I think it is from a Ricky Martin song.
As I said, I need to get out.
And this here, this is my baby, the star of my little garden.
Can you tell what it is?
Maybe a close-up will help.
That little thing there is a baby cucumber.
I love this plant. I look at it at least 5 times a day.
I also googled cucumber plants and I can tell you many interesting things about the different way of cutting it down. I choose an easy way of cutting that will result in a lot of cucumbers over a short timespan. The advantage of this type of cutting is that most of the growth will be in the height, and not so much to the sides. When I read about an plant with a traditional cut spreading several meters to each side, I realised I should go for the more modern and easy way of cutting it.
It did mean that I had to break off some of the little cucumbers to help the plant reserve energy for its own growth.
Another sign that I might need a change of scenery soon was that I felt horrible that I had to break of some of the beautiful baby cucumbers. I had four tiny ones in my hand and I felt like a cucumber killer.
Are you still with me? I wouldn't blame anyone for having left this blog by now.
Anyway now I just noticed some mean-looking bugs on two of my plants and I feel oddly depressed.
It is time for me to see new horizons! Monday I am going to the library with the kids, Tuesday is pilates, Wednesday is play group, Thursdag mothers group and another play group Friday.
That better be enough, otherwise I don't know what I am going to do!
Sincerely, the cucumber killer
