Visiting doctor Nir
I really should post a picture of Magnus with chubby cheeks and a huge smile, but I do not have any that you haven't seen. So instead you get Samuel with a slightly disturbing and rather manic smile. Don't ask me why, he just did that when I got my camera out.
The reason I should post a picture of Magnus is obviously because this post is about Magnus - and a little bit about a pediatrician and the Danish system!
Magnus have been a little underweight, which is completely understandable after all his sickness and stomach problems. That being said there is also a big "but". Because even though there is a reason for it, he still needs to gain some weight! And pronto please!
The lovely pediatrician told me to just put sugar on whatever and go ahead and add butter. The last month I did just that! Oh, and I also put cream in his bottle.
That is right! While I couldn't convince him to eat frosting, apple pie or muffins, he did enjoy a little bit of cream in his milk.
So did it work?
Today we had an appointment with the lovely pediatrician who measured and weighed our little guy. And it worked beyond my expectations. Mr. Magnus had gained 750 grams and grown 3 centimeters in little over a month. I am sure it was the cream, that did it!
I was so excited and honestly rather relieved. The medicine he is getting for his stomach problems also helps and life is good, oh so good! And between you and me, I am really enjoying not forcefeeding my child prunes or a variety of strange seeds or keeping him away from anything containing even a tiny bit of white flour. I think he likes that too.
Another thing I should say is that I am a little in love with our pediatrician. She has a long waitinglist, is stylish, super knowledgeable and somehow she manage to make me feel like a competent, well-informed, and clever mother. Honestly, what is not to love?
Today she also told me how one of her children had the same problems as Magnus have, and her take on it. She could relate to my frustration and she listened and gave her view on it. She assured me and shared some of her own insights which helped me in this process.
But the thing that really made me want to hug her today, was when she, stylish super-pediatrician, kneeled down on the ground before little, tired Samuel and helped him put his shoes on.
I have a friend from abroad who sometimes tease me and say that we Danes love the Danish system and anything Danish - she is probably right. At least I have to say that I do love the people I have met in the Danish healthsystem. I love our doctors, the midwives, the nurses and of course the pediatricians. I love how they listen to me, to my concerns and how they respect my views, and I love how they treat my two boys, how they talk to them, explain things and walk them through things step by step. Even if it is merely helping them put their shoes on.
Magnus is doing so well that we don't have to visit the pediatrician again. I am glad he is well, and a little sad we won't visit her again. But mostly glad!
